Savage Axis Bolt Variants
There are many variations to the savage axis that are not marked by model numbers. The only variation that savage has called out is when they switched triggers in them. But there are many differences in the stock and especially the bolts internal working parts.

Bushing a Mosin Nagant 9130 Bolt

If I ever build a rifle on a Mosin Nagant one of the first things I do is Bush the Bolt. Once bushed you can run modern ammo and PSI levels. Often you cannot reach even the SAMI spec PSI with Mosin because the firing pin hole is so oversized. This procedure corrects that.

Dude you shill waaaayyy too hard. You think people wont have to go into debt for a 30k machine? That you claim to have paid off in 2 weeks. Yet you say a haas that costs 45k will take forever to pay off. by your math it would take 1 extra week to pay off. CNCA will gladly take your payments with no early payment penalty. You are just talking out your ass. No way on earth id take a tormach over my haas. My machine came set up, installed, with factory training and support and a warranty where the techs come right to my house. the extra 13k i paid was well worth it, the machine has a chip auger and 40 gallons of coolant. Tormachs just dont compare. 1100mx is 1600lbs, mini mill is 3500lbs. thats a MASSIVE difference in rigidity.

The Richard Lee loading manual does not do pressure tests themselves, they only take test data from others that do and jumble it all together, of which they lose the test barrel length, case brand, primer type and brand, as well as bullet brand. And some 45 caliber bullets are .451" and some are .452" diameter. These are all important elements, as one should never take data made for one specific brand and type bullet and turn and use it with a different brand or type bullet. This is due to Brinell hardness and bearing surfaces can be different, as well as the shape can be slightly different with longer or shorter lengths, all of which can cause extremely high pressure issues. One should only use data straight from a reputable data source [see paragraph below] that does their own pressure testing which give the test barrel length, case brand, primer type and brand, and most of all the brand of the type bullet used in developing the data. Each one of these elements that are changed is a compromise of which if all are compromised at the same time could very well add up to a recipe for disaster. Yet again, Richard Lee's manual throws out one of the carnal safety rules of "never use load data developed for one brand of bullet for another brand of the same style bullet". Keep in mind that it is always better to throw out Richard Lee's manual than any of the safety rules. But with all that said Richard Lee's reloading manual has a wealth of knowledge in the front half that makes the book well worth having. Just do not ignore the Cautions, Warnings, and Nevers there within. Lyman, Speer, Nosler, Sierra, Barnes, Swift, Berger, Norma, Lapua, VihtaVuori, Accurate, Western Powder, Hodgdon, or even Hornady reloading manuals are far better suited than Richard Lee's for gleaning load data from, as they all not only do their own testing but they all give the test barrel length, case brand, primer type and brand, as well as the bullets brand and type for each load recipe. Lyman has most everyone's bullets and many powders too, so it is a good all around manual to get first. Then once one figures a particular bullet they want to use they should get the bullet manufacturer's manual, and try and get the powder manufacturer's manuals that they plan to use as well. Then as one decides to use other manufacturer's bullets and powders they should add these manuals as well. And Lyman also has a Cast Bullet reloading manual for those who wish to cast their own bullets. There are also other reloading manuals that do not pressure test their loading data and those should not be used for load data but can be used to glean information of the reloading process. So once one has all the powder and bullet manufacture's manuals they could continue to add these other manuals for the knowledge in the first half of them (only).

I too was a little skeptical, but I do believe in small incremental imporvements adding up to make a dramatic difference, and after installing I can definitely say this could be one of those. For the price its a no brainer, but the real biggest difference is it made my Savage 110 Ultralite, already a very light rifle, capable of running the bolt one handed easier. Its so light the friction of the bolt handle is actually greater than the weight of the rifle, so it just moves the whole rifle instead of the handle. Now, less friction, less bolt movement weight, and it moves the handle instead of the whole rifle. Thanks. Would you also think oil or light grease may lessen it up even more? I put a small bit of oil but not much.

Just installed this kit, and I honestly can't tell a difference, good or bad, in bolt lift. It feels exactly the same in my case. Installed it per the video instructions. Still have to use the scope as a thumb brace when lifting the bolt with one hand which I had hoped to eliminate. Maybe the difference is more noticeable on other firing pin type bolts. I'm probably jusy going to give up on this rifle and build something else.

PM machines are made in Taiwan, the Republic of China, not over in Shanghai where all the other Commie Chinese lathes come from. They are higher quality. How do I know? They offer a 2 year warantee, not a 1 year as do all the Commie Chinese lathes. The length of the factory provided warantee tells a lot about what they think of their own products. Yes... PMs are good machines but please... they may be manufactured by ethnic Chinese but those folks are not in mainland, communist, China.

Installed my Lift kit along with the mcarbo pro trigger kit on my Axis .223 and wow, feels like a completely different rifle. Got the bolt on handle as well, little lose with a dab of glue, took it off, the glue came off extremely easy which is excellent, put a good sized bit on both sides, and got it together, still a ever slight wiggle but seems to hold well. Luckily if i decide to go another option, cleanup is a breeze, overall very pleased.

Thanks for the detailed, informative, piece by piece assessment. So much for the naysayers who say the Patriot's bolt design is "dangerous". Too many internet keyboard jockeys out there. Overall, seems nicely designed to me. I really like the Patriot, but the only thing holding me back from getting one is they seem to be inconsistent from one rifle to the next. It seems they either shoot well under MOA, or their accuracy leaves a little to be desired. The good ones are really good and the bad ones...not so much. However, they do have a following and many people praise them and their accuracy. Overall though, there are some nice things to like about the Patriot: they have one of the smoother running bolts in a budget rifle (no doubt partly due to the decreased friction/contact of the fluting); they have a decent trigger that can be adjusted down to 2 lbs., which is rare for a budget rifle, or any mass produced rifle for that matter; the magazine has a proper 5-round capacity in the cartridges I would consider buying it in; and while the magazine is fully plastic, it's rigid, it loads nicely, and it snaps solidly and reassuringly into place. But most importantly, from everything I have heard about them, they have no real issues with feeding, extraction or ejection like some budget rifles do. Again, I'd love to get one, but their inconsistency prevents me from laying down my hard-earned cash. If I knew I was getting an accurate one, I'd buy it. I do like that they're made in America though, and hopefully they rectify their inconsistencies and minor quirks, if and when they come out with an updated Patriot in the future. What's your take on the Patriot overall, Grimstod Desh? Thanks for the video. Cheers.
